This was a very close race this year with Gustavo and Dave Armbruster both finishing on 6.5 points having drawn with each other and beaten all other opponents. Gustavo wins on the tiebreak calculation making that a hat-trick of victories in consecutive years.
Plate (U1900):Mick Riding
Another close one with Ethan Ross and David Pritchard matching Mick on 5 points. Again, the tiebreak calculation decides it.
Challengers (U1500):Ethan Ross
5 points. An excellent result with some wins against much higher rated opponents. Ethan put in a tremendous run of 15 consecutive wins through the second half of the season which included his 5 wins in the championship.
Juniors:Ethan Ross
Winning the Juniors title in addition to winning the Challengers trophy. A mention here for Gautham Sathishkumar and Joey Pramana who both finished a point behind Ethan on 4 points and were the closest to him for both the Challengers and Juniors trophies.
Gustavo finished on 6 points, a point clear of a group of players on 5. Well done! Champion for the second year running.
Plate:
Mark McKay
A solid performance with 5 points, only dropping points in games against significantly higher rated players.
Challengers:
Alan Green
4.5 points. An excellent set of results for somebody who was a newcomer to competitive OTB chess this year. Was also second to Mark in the Plate.
Juniors:
Lev Drobiazko
2.5 points. Won on tiebreak ahead of Aaron Cheung who also finished with 2.5. An excellent result for Lev having been drawn against some strong opponents.
The final table is shown below:

Gustavo’s first year with the club has been a very successful one. As well as supporting our Empire team cement their place in Division 1, he managed an impressive 5 wins and 1 draw for a total of 5.5 out of 6 to be crowned the 2023 Club Champion!
2023 Major winner
Ray Devenney
After a hard fought playoff this year Ray managed to defeat Paul 1.5 v 0.5 to secure the Major title!
2023 Minor Winner
Paul Costello
A great result for one of our senior members, even had a hard fought playoff to try and win the Major!
2022 / 23 Club Championship – Final Standings
Congratulations to Gustavo Leon Cazares who, as already announced, is our Club Champion for this year.
Congratulations to Emma Salazar who is our Junior Champion.
Ray Devenney and Paul Costello played a two round play-off to decide who would be Major winner. Ray won.
Despite losing the Major play-off, Paul is the Minor winner , so congratulations to him as well.
There are a couple of contenders for most improved player in the Club Championship based on October 2022 ratings. I am awarding this prize to David Pritchard who was rated 1450 in October 2022 and got a creditable 3 points, so congratulations to him as well.
Prizes will be presented at our AGM in October.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Club Championship. We ended up with 23 players. Three others dropped out, all for reasons unconnected with chess. All but one game were completed, nearly all on time despite the busy chess schedule we now have.
I will appreciate any suggestions as to how the Club Championship might be improved next year. We can start earlier in the year which will allow a bit more time between rounds.
